What is a project plan?

For successful project management it is essential to have a project plan. It outlines the projects objectives, goals, timelines, tasks and responsibilities. This is often supported by diagrams or charts (like a Gantt chart). The project plan supports the project manager to define and organize resources and tasks throughout the project. Often this is done in an Excel Sheet.

How to create a project plan

As a project manager, you should consider the following steps to create a project plan:

1. Formulate the requirements of the project
2. Define the resources that are available (Human Resources, Time, Budget, all required material or technology resources.
3. Define the project timeline and add a schedule to your plan to see how resources are used and distributed. It also gives you an overview on the deadlines and you can always check the current status.
